Old Redwood Highway Traffic Simulation

Peak hour traffic was modeled, including all of the traffic expected if Olivers opens on Old Redwood Highway. The traffic simulation, and related traffic engineering, indicate that either alternative accommodates the same volume of cars in the same amount of time, including all traffic proposed by Olivers.

Public Safety

Based on a recent survey, 8 out of 9 fire departments and fire districts in Sonoma County consider roundabouts acceptable or preferred for emergency response. Chief Parish of the Cotati Police Department also supports the use of roundabouts due to the dramatically improved safety record when compared to signalized intersections. Both City alternatives meet or exceed all applicable design standards for emergency responders.

The following video demonstrates emergency response through a roundabout that is 14 feet smaller than what is proposed for the Village Mainstreet Alternative.

Bird Rock, California

A community near La Jolla, California, constructed a project similar to the Village Main Street Alternative to address safety, a poor business environment, lack of parking, and poor pedestrian access. La Jolla Avenue is very similar to Old Redwood Highway; it was a 4 lane roadway, similar daily car volumes, and it is a commercial area. Today, the merchants association describe a stabilized business environment and pass through traffic stopping to shop because of the change in appearance.
